The Wisdom of God ... as revealed in Proverbs
"All the kings of the earth were seeking the presence of Solomon to hear the wisdom which God had put in his heart." II Chron. 9:23
The book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, records the wisdom which God gave to him. Throughout history, this wisdom has enabled believers to know God better and taught them how to live with each other. But could Gods wisdom also be a bridge to help unbelievers come to know him?
Consider for a moment, what a religious leader in your country might think upon receiving a booklet entitled Wisdom from God. Probably he will find much in the book with which he can immediately agree. Other passages will certainly challenge his thinking, but none of it will be offensive.
Next, imagine what local businessmen, schoolteachers, taxi drivers, secretaries, shopkeepers, plumbers, or laborers will think when they receive this book. For the first time in their lives, they will hear the wisdom of God that is self-revealing. Their lives will be enriched and your relationship with them deepened. Gods wisdom in Proverbs may be the key to open their minds and speak to their hearts.
By virtue of its amazingly universal appeal, when Proverbs is packaged into its own booklet, it becomes a powerful tool to introduce people to God on neutral ground. This is an important point. By taking Proverbs out of the Old Testament, and repackaging it as its own book, we give God an opportunity to speak to people in a way they understand, overcoming their preconceived ideas, exposing their sin, and teaching them truth through this wonderful medium of Proverbs. Then as people receive Gods wisdom, a mysterious thing happens — a softening in their heart towards God takes place.
Proverbs is now being used to reach people with the wisdom of God who might not be willing to receive other portions of Scripture. People enjoy listening to Gods wisdom. And because Gods wisdom is generic and applies to everyone, even unbelievers are touched as they read: "a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger ... better is a poor man who walks in his integrity, than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool ... a false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight." By reflecting on these proverbs people begin to understand the ways of God.
People need to know God, not only His ways but also His person, but in order for this to happen, the heart must be prepared. The wisdom of God as it is in Proverbs prepares peoples hearts for this wonderful experience to happen.
